When video conferencing or IP telephony traffic passes through a gateway containing a firewall or proxy, a video-aware or voice-aware firewall or proxy is used.

The ISM previously recommended that when video conferencing or internet protocol telephony traffic passed through a gateway that contained firewalls that the firewalls be video-aware or voice-aware. The scope of this recommendation has now been expanded to cover proxies used in a gateway.

Miscellaneous changes were made to rationale and recommendations throughout the publication to clarify content without changing intent. This included a review from the Guidelines for System Hardening chapter through to the Guidelines for Data Transfers chapter.

Agencies using IPT that have a requirement to implement a firewall within a deployed gateway between computer networks should use an evaluated voice-aware firewall that meets the same minimum level of assurance as specified for normal firewalls.
